Known as France's hidden corner, this area south of Bordeaux and near the Spanish border has much of the quality of Bordeaux wines but without the high price tags. There are four sub regions each with unique soil, grapes and climate. Like Boardeaux, the vineyards can be found along the Dordogne river where the climate is slightly warmer. The Cahors region is the most famous and is known for being the birth place of the malbec grape. Their wines are aged in oak, deeply inky colored and rich in tannins. Madiran showcases a unique highly tannic red grape call Tannat giving bold dry style red wines. Lasty this region produces excellent approchable and aromatic dry and sweet white wines, from the Côtes de Gascogne with grapes such as Colombard, Sauvignon Blanc or Gros and Petit Manseng.
