The dominant sunshine and pleasant breezes of this large valley creates a perfect climate for grapes growth such as Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre (GSM) for the reds, Grenache Blanc or Gris, Viognier and Marsanne-Roussanne for the whites. North of Montelimar, the Syrah is the dominant single red variety planted, which can resist to cooler semi-continental climate; while south of the town, the warmer, dryer Mediterranean climate produces generous red blends with Grenache dominance.
